Because I work at AM640 Home of the Leafs I get a lot of young people and students asking how to get into the sports media business. I came across a great piece in Fortune( Sept 6 2010) about Eric Shanks – 38 year old president of Fox Sports.

Here is his advice to up and comers in the sports media -

1) Be aggressive – bite off more than you can chew. If you are not being aggressive and you are not rising to the top – its hard to get noticed.
2) Do anything- If you are really serious get in at any level. Do anything at any price. You may have a degree in sports management but that doesn’t mean you know how to manage anything in sports.

3) Stay calm – don’t get out your fire hose out until you know where the fire is. Take a breath first.

4) Tell a story – its about knowing how to tell a story – if you are a good writer and you have a handle on the technology – you have a shot at making

 

If you have any young people in your circle of influence who could make use of these four points please let them know what it takes to punch through to the top.
